Handspring Licenses Mobileer’s ME1000 For Use in Treo Mobile Phones

San Rafael, CA – January 5, 2004.

Mobileer (the spin-out from SoftSynth.com) announces its polyphonic ringtone engine software has been licensed to Handspring, Inc. for use in its Treo mobile phone products.

"We are very pleased with the sound quality, performance and small footprint of the ME1000 (SP-MIDI synth) software. Mobileer has a great solution for low-powered mobile devices.", said Mitch Allen, Director of Software Engineering for Handspring.

The Mobileer ME1000 is a highly portable, ultra-low memory footprint software product which can be integrated into the designs of mobile phones, PDAs, toys and low cost musical instruments and other handheld devices. The software is designed specifically to be embedded into fixed-point integer 32 bit CPU designs such as those based on ARM or MIPs. The ME1000 lowers costs, development time, and real estate consumption for device manufacturers.

Music is synthesized directly by the ME1000 without using audio samples or wavetables. The ME1000 uses a variety of synthesis techniques to convert standard General MIDI (SMF) files for production of modern high-fidelity sounds. Ringtone and music samples are available for listening on the Mobileer website (www.mobileer.com/ringtones/).

The software was designed for 32-bit embedded processors such as ARM or MIPS. It uses integer operations for its signal processing and is written in very portable 'C' code that has no operating system dependencies. This allows the ringtone software to be integrated very quickly into the product software.

According to Wayne Cullen, VP Product and Business Development, “The Mobileer ME1000 obviates the need for specialized chips typically used for playing synthesized sounds such as ring-tones in a mobile phone. This results in a significant savings in cost, real estate, and power consumption in hand-held devices where low cost, low size and low power are extremely important.”
